A man died after Trasylol was used in his open heart surgery. His widow filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the drug and the drug was pulled from the market shortly thereafter. Bayer claims they are just evaluating the drugs safety after a Canadian study showed the risk of death is increased by 50 percent after use of the drug.
But Marc Jay Bern, a Manhattan attorney representing Josephine Randone, said the withdrawal "absolutely has to do with lawsuits." Bern said he knows of 19 or 20 suits that have been filed nationwide in the last two years because of the drug. He added that he plans to file yet another suit for another client.
This law firm is representing his widow. Joseph Randone suffered the effects of Trasylol for eight months before he finally died in 2006.
Trasylol has been used worldwide since 1993. According to Bayer it has been used on 4.77 million patients.
