The FDA has asked that Bayer stop all marketing of the drug Trasylol. Trasylol was pulled from the market following a study in Canada that showed an increased risk of death while taking the drug. Trasylol is used to stop bleeding during heart surgery.

FDA requested the suspension in the interest of patient safety based on the serious nature of the outcomes suggested in the preliminary data. FDA has not yet received full study data but expects to act quickly with Bayer, the study's researchers at the Ottawa Health Research Institute, and other regulatory agencies to undertake a thorough analysis of data to better understand the risks and benefits of Trasylol.

The Canadian study showed that there was an increased risk of kidney damage, heart attack and stroke after the use of Trasylol. There are only two other drugs available that are in the same class as Trasylol. Trasylol is still available for use on a very limited basis to prevent a drug shortage.
