The Commission for Human Medicine has reviewed data from the BART study that was performed in Canada on the anti-bleeding drug Trasylol. Trasylol was recalled in early November after the BART study showed the drug increased the risk of death by fifty percent over other drugs in the same class. The CHM announced they have suspended Trasylol's license.

Trasylol is indicated for the reduction of blood loss and need for blood transfusion in coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

The CHM concluded that although aprotinin may be more effective than the comparator drugs at reducing bleeding, the risks outweigh the benefits.

Trasylol has been linked to hundreds of deaths by kidney failure, heart attacks, and death. Trasylol is still in stock at many hospitals and most have said they will use the drug on a case by case basis until supplies run out.
